8 Tips For Perinatal Nurses
Posted on Jul 11, 2011 under Uncategorized | No CommentKeep Learning More About Perinatal Nursing
There is always more that you can learn about perinatal nursing so keep learning. After a while you may come to feel like an expert but this viewpoint can keep you from paying attention to new information in the field of perinatal nursing. Keep learning so that you can always provide your patients with the best care possible.
Every Patient Is Different
This is a good rule for all nurses but is especially important for perinatal nurses to remember. You will be providing care to a patient during the pregnancy, through the birth, and for a brief period after that. Not every patient will need the same things from you so pay attention to how each patient is different and what they need from you.
Provide A Complete Education To Every Patient
When you are educating patients you may assume that some patients already know certain bits of information. This is risky. Even if a patient has been through pregnancies before you still want to provide a complete education.
Offer To Answer Questions More Than Once
Patients don’t always have questions when you first offer to answer those questions so give your patients more than one opportunity. If possible, go away and come back after giving a patient sufficient time to think.
Consider Cultural Influences
Cultural influences can affect how a patient responds to what you do so you want to be aware of this. You never know for sure ahead of time how cultural influences might affect your interactions with a patient so pay close attention to anything that might indicate that cultural forces may be at work.
Remember The Emotional Needs Of Patients
You are probably already used to the whole process of pregnancy and childbirth but there is a good chance that your patient is not. Remember that patients have emotional needs. You can work to provide comfort by giving the patient information on the resources that are available. This information will give the reassurance that naturally comes along with a patient knowing that there are resources they can turn to.
Learn To Distance Yourself From Your Patients
As much as you care about your patients, you want to keep some emotional distance. This is an emotionally charged time for any patient and if you go along for this emotional ride then you will wear yourself out. Being able to keep your distance does not mean that you don’t care. It means that you want to be able to have something to give your next patient too.
Remind Yourself Why You Got Into Perinatal Nursing Regularly
Knowing why you chose this field of nursing will help to keep you inspired and interested. Burnout is common for nurses so you want to remember just how rewarding the work that you are doing can be.
